Good Tech Support

Five Steps For Good Tech Support

Getting technical support doesn't have to be a nightmare. Today I've got the checklist to help make your next tech support call a smooth one.

With some assistance from Robert Vamosi over at ZDNet Help & How-To, here are five steps to getting good technical support.

  • Keep a journal. You should have a binder or notebook by your computer. Having basic information helps technicians immensely. In the journal, write down:

The specifics of your machine (make, model, serial number, processor, RAM, etc.)

All of the software installed on your machine

All of the peripherals attached to your machine

The action you performed when the error occurred

Every error message you get in detail, include .dlls, random numbers, everything

  • Back up completely and regularly. One common solution for computer errors is reformatting the hard drive. But in order to get all of your data back you have to run a complete backup -- not just a partial backup of the most recent files. ZDNet Help & How-To shows you how to run a full backup. Click for more.

  • Keep all program disks together. Store all of your program CDs in one place, so you don't have to hunt for that copy of "Office 98." Also, if you download any patches or drivers, copy them to a floppy and label them.

  • Get the technicians' name. Keep track of the tech support people you speak with. Write it down in your journal. This way you can either ask for them again, or keep a record if the problem escalates.

  • Relax. Your computer won't get fixed any faster if you immediately start yelling at the tech support person. Take a deep breath. Calm blue ocean. Calm blue ocean. But if after a while you feel like you're not getting anywhere, ask to speak with a supervisor.

Dealing with tech support will never be a treat -- but these tricks will help make your next call less scary.
